14.06 – Triathlon Ingolstadt

So, here we go: my triathlon season opening 2015, at the same time the National Championships (sprint distance). Entering on high level wasn’t obviously planed, but sometimes “you have to celebrate the festivals as they fall.” Based on my performance the past few weeks, I felt well prepared for the 750m swim, 20km cycling and the final run over 4.6km at the recreational area in Ingolstadt.

The event in the city of “Audi” around the Organisator Gerhard Budy has actually developed in the last 5 years since its inaugural as one of the major triathlons in Bavaria. Especially because it’s just none of the major events of the trade marks Ironman or Challenge. From own experience I know how hard it is to develop a small event from scratch. Being there for the first time, I could experience a wonderful family and great atmosphere already on Saturday when collecting race documents and checking the course. That sense should have been continued for me on Sunday …

The event offers the already mentioned sprint, an Olympic distance and Middle-Distance race as well as relay. For me and further 53 championship competitors (of which unfortunately only 4 in my age group), start was set for 9.25am.

The competition was then somehow fast over and unspectacular J  I felt great during swimming and came as 20th out of the water, with a lag of 2,5’, which is a lot for a sprint distance. At cycling, everything went according to plan, with 32.49min (36.7km / h) I was able to advance to 17th place. And yet once again it was my best discipline, which catapulted me with the 4th best run time overall (18.05min for 4.6km) on the 12th final place in the championship standings and 1st place in the AK 35. And the running was relatively easy. So, either to gently cycled, run to slow or simply in good shape J

Resume: I am very, very pleased with the overall ranking amongst the “youngsters” (+3.45′ on 1). A sprint is, as the name implies, “short & crisp,” the older you get, the better you can draw from your endurance over longer distances. Well, the title: Yes, of course, very happy. But anyone who knows me, also knows that I question any result, incl. mine, very critical. Therefore, a title amongst only 4 more competitors should not be overrated. That, I mean exclusively, only from a quantity NOT quality point of view. I wish, I would have had more competitors …
