The Triathlon in Bad Tölz, existing now for the past 15 years, has established itself in recent years as a permanent event in the foothills of Bavaria’s Alps. 2 years ago (2013) I completed the Sprint/Hobbyrace, as 2nd female overall, today’s showdown was the Short distance.

Start for us 26 woman was early in the morning at 8.30am at Kirchsee, 12km North-East of Bad Tölz. I knew that quite a few good swimmers are participating and hence tried to be part in the front row from the beginning. That worked out! I exited the water as 5th with a – for  me – phantastic time of 25mins, but was already able to make some time in the transition zone; hence I started the bike split with approximately 2mins gap to my team mate Barbara Wöckock (“Babs”) as 2nd ! The bike course, in principle over 2 rounds, also north of Tölz is profiled (460 vertical meters), with its numerous, partial tight turns, 90-degree rebounds and partially still wet asphalt technically very demanding. After 10k I was able to come close to Babs and after 19k to get finally into the lead position. Since the pavement was also rather bad, I cycled the 2nd 20k rather carefully as I did not want to risk a technical defect!
The transition to run, in the sport park of Bad Tölz: I haven’t had too much lead (approx. 300meters), did know however, that I can run fast 🙂 The run course (2 laps a 5km) demands with its 200 vertical meters at the end of the race a lot. However, as I had a lead after the first turn (2.5km) of already 500 meters, and after the pass through to the 2nd lap 800 Meters, I switched into safety –mode for the remaining 5km and enjoyed the run and the victory at all !!
After 2.22h I crossed the finish line, with a 6’ gap to Babs and 3’ faster than the winner from the previous year!  Very happy! Split times (incl. transistion): 25:50 (5) 1:17:29 (1) 39:07 (1) 2:22:27

Next Week Sunday (05th July) I will try to defend my “title” defend at Triathlon Königsbrunn (Sprint) before I then make my way on Wednesday 08 July for the ETU European Championships.
